Additional information
Experimental data assessing the toxicity of diammonium tartrate (CAS 3164-29-2) towards aquatic organisms are not available. Therefore, read across was performed from the analogues substances strontium tartrate (CAS 868-19-9) and diammonium oxalate (CAS 6009-70-7) in order to cover the potential toxicity of both the tartrate and the ammonium ions. The ionic strontium and oxalate species are considered to be of low toxicity to the aquatic organisms. Details on the read across justification are provided in section 13 of the IUCLID dossier.
All studies were performed according to the appropriate OECD guidelines and GLP conditions.
Data for the acute aquatic toxicity of the analogues substance strontium tartrate (CAS 868-19-9) are available for two trophic levels, i.e. for aquatic invertebrates and unicellular freshwater microalgae, while long term toxicity data are available only for algae. The EC50 values for both trophic levels were > 100 mg/L and the ErC10 (72 h) value for algae was likewise > 100 mg/L (nominal).
Furthermore, 2 toxicity studies with aquatic invertebrates or algae and the analogues substance diammonium oxalate (CAS 6009-70-7) did not show any toxicity effects towards these trophic levels. The tests resulted in an EC50 (48 h) value of > 33 mg/L (meas. TWA) for aquatic invertebrates, an ErC50 (72 h) value of > 78 mg/L and an ErC10 (72 h) of ≥ 78 mg/L (geom. mean meas.) for aquatic algae.
Published data on the toxicity of ammonium to aquatic invertebrates and algae suggest that the ammonium concentration released by diammonium tartrate, is not toxic to aquatic species at the concentration of 100 mg/L diammonium tartrate that was applied in the standard OECD guideline studies. This is additionally verified by the results of the studies with diammonium oxalate showing no toxicity towards these organisms.
Based on these results, the target substance diammonium tartrate (CAS 3164-29-2) is not considered toxic to aquatic organisms.
