Description of key information

The ready biodegradability of succinic acid was determined by measurement of the dissolved organic carbon content (DOC) at frequent intervals over a period of 28 days using OECD guideline 301E. Succinic acid, which is rapidly formed by hydrolysis of succinic anhydride (half-life approx. 5 min), was found to be readily biodegradable. Consequently, it can be safely assumed that succinic anhydride is also readily biodegradable and no further biodegradation tests in soil or aquatic systems are necessary according to REACH Annexes VIII and IX sections 9.2.
