Zebra fish were exposed to trimethylolpropane monoally ether (TMPME) at nominal concentrations of 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 mg/L in a semi-static 96 -hour acute toxicity test according to OECD 203 guidelines. The test design included an untreated control comprising of dilution water only. The 96-hour LC50 determined was 1200 mg TMPME/L (based nominal exposure concentrations). The NOEC (no-observed effect concentration) was 400 mg TMPME/L (Olsson, 2010).

The toxicity of trimethylolpropane diallyl ether (TMPDE 80) to the water flea, Daphnia magna, was determined in the 48 hour acute immobilisation test conducted according to OECD 202. The daphnids were exposed to concentrations of TMPDE 80 between 25 and 400 mg/L. The 48 hour EC50was observed to be 200 mg/L (based on nominal exposure concentrations). The corresponding NOEC was 50 mg/L (Olsson, 2008).

The toxicity of TMPDE 90 to the water flea, Daphnia magna, was determined in the 48 hour acute immobilisation test conducted according to OECD 202. The daphnids were exposed to concentrations of TMPDE 80 between 25 and 400 mg/L. The 48 hour EC50was calculated to be 189 mg/L (based on nominal exposure concentrations). The corresponding NOEC was 100 mg/L (Olsson, 2008).

Daphnia magna were exposed to TMPME at nominal loading rates of 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 mg/L in a static 48 -hour acute toxicity test according to OECD 202guidelines. The test design included an untreated control comprising of dilution water only. The 48-hour EC50 was 1530 mg TMPME/L (based nominal exposure concentrations). The NOEC (no-observed effect concentration) was 800 mg TMPME/L (Olsson, 2008)

The toxicity of TMPDE 80 to the green algae, Selenastrum capricornutum, was determined in the 72 hour test conducted according to OECD 201. The algae were exposed to a single concentration of TMPDE 80 of 100 mg/L. The 72 hour EC50(based on growth rate) was observed to be >100 mg/L (based on nominal exposure concentrations). The corresponding NOEC was 100 mg/L (Olsson, 1995).

The algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was exposed to TMPME at nominal loading rates of 15.6, 31.2, 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/L in a 72 -hour growth inhibition test according to the OECD 201 guideline. The test design included an untreated control comprising of dilution water only. The 72-hour ErC50 was 610 mg TMPME/L (based nominal exposure concentrations) and the corresponding NOEC (no-observed effect concentration) was 125 mg TMPME/L. The 72-hour EyC50 was 215 mg TMPME/L (based nominal exposure concentrations) and the corresponding NOEC (no-observed effect concentration) was 125 mg TMPME/L (Olsson, 2008).

The toxicity of TMPDE to activated sewage sludge was investigated in a respiration inhibition test according to OECD test guideline 209. Following three hours exposure to TMPDE the EC50 was observed to be > 1000 mg/L (based on nominal exposure concentrations). A 37% effect on respiration was seen at 1000 mg/L with no effect at 316 mg/L, therefore the NOEC was observed to 316 mg/L (Knight, TMPDE, 2010).

In the chemical safety assessment performed according to Article 14(3) in connection with Annex I section 3 (Environmental Hazard Assessment) no hazard was identified. Therefore according to REACH Annex I (5.0) exposure estimation is not necessary for long-term toxicity to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Consequently, in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the studies do not need to be conducted as all identified uses of the substance are assessed as safe for the environment.
