Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 301 F (Ready Biodegradability: Manometric Respirometry Test)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Oxygen conditions:
aerobic
Inoculum or test system:
activated sludge, domestic, non-adapted
Details on inoculum:
- Source of inoculum/activated sludge (e.g. location, sampling depth, contamination history, procedure): ARA Ergolz II, Füllinsdorf/Switzerland
Duration of test (contact time):
ca. 28 d
Initial conc.:
ca. 100 mg/L
Based on:
test mat.
Reference substance:
other: sodium benzoate

Value:
< 10
Sampling time:
28 d
Details on results:
Points of degradation plot (test substance):
2 % degradation after 2 d
2 % degradation after 7 d
2 % degradation after 14 d
3 % degradation after 21 d
3 % degradation after 28 d
Results with reference substance:
Points of degradation plot (reference substance):
47 % degradation after 2 d
71 % degradation after 7 d
81 % degradation after 14 d
85 % degradation after 21 d
88 % degradation after 28 d
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Interpretation of results:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed
Conclusions:
The test item was found to be not biodegradable within 28 days according to the OECD guideline 301F.
Executive summary:

Test item was investigated for its ready biodegradability in a '28 -day manometric respirometry test' acc. to the OECD guideline 301F (1992).

The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in the test media was within the range of the inoculum controls.

Therefore, test item was found to be not biodegradable under the test conditions within 28 days.

In the toxicity control, no inhibitory effect of test item was observed.

The suitability of the activated sludge was confirmed by appropriate biodegradation of the reference control sodium benzoate.

Description of key information

Biodegradation in water: screening tests: not biodegradable: 3 % degradation after 28 d: < 10% degradation, parameter O2 consumption

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
not biodegradable
Type of water:
freshwater

Additional information

Most probably due to insolubility and non bioavailability, no biodegradation could be observed. Further details of evaluation of the P criterion can be found in the PBT assessment (section 8 of the CSR).
