A GLP guideline study according to OECD 301 F was performed.
The criterion for ready biodegradability under the conditions of a manometric respirometry test is the 10-day window, describing the period between reaching at least 10% degradation and 60% degradation. This period should not exceed 10 days. The test item L-proline contains nitrogen; therefore the evaluation of biodegradation has to be based on ThODNO3 and ThODNH4.
The mean biodegradation of 10% of L-proline was reached at day 2 (ThODNH4, ThODNO3). At the end of day 12 the biodegradation of L-proline was 118% (ThODNH4) and 87% (ThODNO3) and therefore the 10 day window criterion was passed. The mean biodegradation at test end after 28 days was 128% (ThODNH4) and 94% (ThODNO3).
According to the guideline OECD 301, L-proline is considered to be readily biodegradable.
This experimental result in a GLP guideline study was expected due to the results from older studies and an estimation by calculation.
