Analysis of the chemical structure revealed the presence of a nitro-group representing an alert structure for explosive properties. The calculated chemical oxygen balance is above the trigger value of -200, and the determination of the exothermic decomposition energy demonstrated an energy release above the critical value of 500 J/g. Additional data generated for two sales products containing about 30 and 28 % of the pure dye demonstrated to be negative in a test on spontaneous decomposition, but release of flammable gases with a gas quantitiy of 40 L/kg at 350 °C has been observed at least for one product. But for both products, process safety of the dried powder material was guaranteed. As a conclusion, the substance is judged to harvest no explosive properties and the crude dye material as well as related products do not have to be classified.

Screening evaluation
Analysis of the molecular structure of Disperse Yellow 042 revealed, that at least one nitro group is present in the molecule.
Calculated oxygen balance was -175.42 and therefore higher than the trigger value of -200.
Determination of the exothermic decomposition energy
The curve displayed one exothermic peak between 250 and 340 °C with an energy release of 834.64 J/g. The peak is considered to represent substance decomposition energy. As a result the energy release is above a critical trigger level of 500 J/g but the onset of energy release is below 500 °C.
Data availability for related sales products
For two of the related sales products containing approximately 30 % (Teratop Yellow GWL-01) and 28 % (Teratop Yellow NFG) of the crude dye, additional data are available. For these products, the following tests have been conducted by a certified test institute:
- Combustibility test according to VDI 2263, SAV: 006a
- Decomposition test (Lütolf dynamic) according to VDI 2263, SAV: 010
- Spontaneous decomposition (deflagration) according to VDI 2263, SAV: 029
- Decomposition Gas according to VDI 2263, SAV: 010
- Decomposition test dynamic (Grewer air) according to VDI 2263, SAV: 008
- Dust explosibility in a modified Hartmann apparatus according to VDI 2263, SAV: 013
- Minimum ignition energy (MIE) MIKE 3 according to EN 13821, ASTM E2019-03, SAV: 001
As a result of these tests, the products are considered to be negative for spontaneous decomposition, but the release of flammable gases has been observed for Teratop Yellow GWL-01 (40 L/kg at about 350 °C). Nevertheless, the results have been judged “negative”. The test results on Teratop Yellow NFG were also negative. Minimum ignition temperatures (BAM method) have been observed >500 °C for both products.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Disperse Yellow 042 is judged to be not explosive, hence it does not warrant classification as per the Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
