Classification of 2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivsfor effects in the environment.

In determining the classification appropriate to2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivs, it is necessary to consider all available evidence concerning its persistence, potential to accumulate and predicted or observed environmental fate and behaviour that may present a long-term and/or delayed danger to the structure and/or functioning of aquatic ecosystems. These points are considered below. 

Persistence

 

2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivsis not readily biodegradable in water. It is also persistent in the sediment and soil compartment.

 

Thus, based upon the half life of2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivs in the three environmental compartments,it can be inferred that2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivs satisfies the criteria for classification as persistent (P) in nature.

 

Potential to accumulate

Predicted and measured log Kow values for2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivsis greater than 4 (Log Kow = 8.02). The potential for2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivs to bioaccumulate in the tissues of organisms that inhabit aquatic or terrestrial matrices is negligible as the BCF factor for the substance is less than 1000.  

 

The calculated BCF of aluminium,2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivsis 10 dimensionless and below the threshold of 2000. 

Thus,2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivsdoes not satisfy the criterion for classification as bioaccumulative (B).

 

The toxicity values of fish, invertebrates and algae are LC50 =106.9048mg/L, NOEC =0.28 mg/L and NOEC =10.95 mg/L, respectively. The toxicity values of the all the three trophic levels do not fall in the criteria for classification for aquatic toxicity (as mentioned in the CLP regulation).Thus, it is concluded that2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivsis not likely to exhibit acute aquatic toxicity.

Thus,2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivs does not satisfy the environmental effects criterion for classification as toxic (T).

 

Thus it can be inferred that2-Naphthalenol, 1-[[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]azo]-, ar',ar''-Me derivsis Persistent (P) not Toxic (T) and not Bio-accumulative (B). So, the overall inference would be that the chemical is not PBT in nature
