Conclusion on classification

Classification of substances under CLP (Regulation EC No 1272/2008) or the previous Directives 67/548/EEC and 1999/45/EC (Classification and labeling of dangerous substances and mixtures) is based on the acute and chronic toxicity of substances in the aquatic compartment. This classification methodology does not take into account the potential effects of a substance to other environmental compartments (sediment/terrestrial/atmospheric compartments).

As acute or chronic toxicity data for SO2 in the aquatic environment are not relevant and are not available (the substance as such does not exists in the aquatic phase),  it is concluded that there is no need/requirement for an environmental classification of SO2.

Conclusion: SO2 is not classified for the environment.
