The inhibition of growth of the alga, Selenastrum capricornutum, following exposure to the test substance was determined in a OECD 201, 72-hour growth test under GLP procedures. Cultures of algae were exposed to the test substance at a nominal concentration of 120 mg/L over several algal generations. The concentrations of the test substance in the exposure solutions were measured using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC/FID). The exposure concentration was calculated as the geometric mean of the test substance solutions analyzed at test start and at 24-hour intervals from test start. The mean analyzed concentration of the test substance was determined to be 122.9 mg/L. Two measures of growth (biomass and growth rate) were used to determine the effects of the test substance on the algae in comparison to a control. Cell counts were made at 24-hour intervals and the growth curves plotted. No inhibition in biomass or growth rate was measured in this study. There was less than 5% difference in the biomass (cell count) when the mean cell count in the test flask was compared to the mean cell count for the control flasks. The ErC50 and EbC50 value were estimated to be greater than 122.9 mg/L. The 72-hour NOEC value for growth rate and biomass were determined to be greater than or equal to122.9 mg/L.
