Preliminary test

Assay No. 1

The test item melted under the flame and made a brown liquid which spread out. Neither ignition, nor propagation was observed.

Assay No. 2

The same observations as for the assay No. 1 were recorded.

Main test

Taking into account the results obtained during the preliminary test, no main test was performed.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item was not considered as highly flammable under these experimental conditions.
Executive summary:

In a study (Defitraces 2010), Catechol was evaluated for its flammability, following A10 method and according to GLP.

In the preliminary assay of this study, the test item melted under the flame and made a brown liquid which spread out. Neither ignition, nor propagation was observed. This result was observed twice.

Taking into account the results obtained during the preliminary test, no main test was performed.

In these conditions, Catechol was not considered as highly flammable.

Description of key information

Catechol is not highly flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Flammability

One study dealing with catechol flammability is available. As an internationally recognized guideline was followed and the GLP were stated, this study of reliability 1 according to Klimisch was selected as a key study.

Flammability in contact with water & Pyrophoricity

These endpoints are waived based on the absence of structural chemical alerts.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Catechol is non flammable when tested according to the A10 method. Hence, it is not classified under CLP criteria.
