Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Emergency measure - Inhalation: move affected person to fresh air. Keep person warm and at rest. If not breathing, if breathing is irregular or if respiratory arrest occurs, provide artificial respiration or oxygen by trained personnel. Get attention if symptoms occur.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water, occasionally lift the upper and lower eyelids. Check and remove any contact lenses. Continue to rinse for at least 10 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation occurs.
Emergency measure - Skin: flush contaminate skin with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothes and shoes. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: wash out mouth with water. Keep person warm and at rest.Get medical attention if symptoms occur.
Fire-fighting measures
Recommended extinguishing agent: dry chemical or CO2
Product arising from burning: decomposition products may include the following substances : carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides.
Protective equipment: self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full face-piece operated in positive pressure mode.
Accidental release measures
Emergency measures in case of spillage: prevent entry into sewers, water courses, basements or confined areas. Use sparkproof tools and explosion proof equipment. Use a tool to scoop up solid or absorbed material and place into appropriate labelled waste container.
Environmental precautions : inform the relevant authorities if the product has caused environmental pollution (sewers, waterways, soil or air).
Handling and storage
The entire process is managed under Strictly Controled Conditions according to article 18 of REACH and the Guidance on Intermediate issued by ECHA.
HS&E Management system and procedures are implemented at Bolbec facilities. Regular audits to control compliance with internal procedures and regulation are periodically performed. The entire process involves only trained and experienced workers (formalized authorization procedure).
Collective protective equipments (venting system) are regularly checked to maintained ventilation efficiency.
Special procedures for the management of Individual protective equipements (not required for the process involving THIOFESTERMET) have been implemented; it concerns: choice, maintenance, storage…
The big-bags of THIOFESTERMET are received from our supplier LONZA and stored in warehouse with control and associated procedures. (quality control). The containers (big-bag) are permanently closely maintained during this storage, except for the sampling, which is performed in a dedicated sampling hood with controlled laminar air flow. The big bag of THIOFESTERMET is loaded to the vessel through an inclined channel to which the external platic bag is fastened. The transfer is provided through a PTS system. The hoist lifting up the bigbag is servo-controlled to the loading --> this avoid the spilling of the substance. Specialized equipment is used to load the substance in flammable atmosphere. The substance is totally consumed during the reaction. Handling instructions and precautionnary measures, dangerous properties of the substance : at workplace, on the masterbatch record . Handling: in a ventilated area.
Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Big-bag from 350 to 500 kg, tightly closed and sealed until ready for use.
Bigbag lifted with a hoist servocontrolled to the loading, and substance transferred through a PTS system.
Storage: must be stored protected from direct sunlight in adry, cool and well-ventilated area.
