First-aid measures
Inhalation: Move person into fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Consult a physician.
Eyes: Rinse immediately with plenty of water; if necessary seek medical advice.
Skin: Clean with large quantities of water, soap or other suitable agents which are kind to the skin. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
Ingestion: Drink plenty of water, if necessary with added activated charcoal. If the person feels unwell seek medical advice.
Fire-fighting measures
Suitable extinguishing media: Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide.
Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture: Carbon oxides
Precautions for fire-fighters: Wear self contained breathing apparatus for fire fighting if necessary.
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions: Use personal protective equipment. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing vapors, mist or gas. Ensure
adequate ventilation. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Avoid breathing dust.
Environment
Environmental precautions : Avoid release to the environment.
Contain spill.
Soak up with inert absorbent material.
Sweep up and shovel into suitable containers for disposal.
Keep in properly labeled containers.
Clean contaminated surface thoroughly.
Flush with water.
Dispose of rinse water as waste water for collection and dispoal by licensed operators by incineration.
In accordance with local French regulations, an emergency study which is completed with internal emergency operating plan . There is also a “SGS” which is a specific safety follow up for all inspection ensuring regular appraisal of emergency measures..
An emergency plan is developed with internal training to ensure that all straff are adequately familiar with emergency procedures and have adequate details to prevent exposure of the substance to humans and the environemtn in the event of an emergency situation. In additrion, a higher emergency regional plan has been developed with detailed assessment of and emergency measures to be bought on line in the event of a catastrophic failing with with outside impact.
Handling and storage
The measures for rigorous containment in place on site are laid out in terms of ISO 9000 quality procedures maintained on site and in the principles of best practice as available to the global corporation. All staff are fully trained in all procedures, including health and safety and emergency measures. All substance handling, staff monitoring and supervision is managed with report management involving check list, safety check list, production follow up, audit, measurement and inventory control processes.
Charging of reaction vessels with raw materials, production flow and process and transference into isolation units for next step reaction in the same closed system is all conducted in sealed closed systems that is monitored and controlled by a Yokogawa Distributed Control System (DSC) with internal sensors and control room operated.
Handling
Advice on safe handling: Use personal protective equipment as required.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.
Do not breathe vapours or spray mist.
Avoid repeated exposure.
Avoid prolonged contact.
Storage
Requirements for storage areas and containers: Keep in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place.
Isolate from incompatible materials.
Keep container tightly closed.
Other data : Stable under normal conditions.
The full production system is isolated at times by means of sealed reaction vessels in a fully closed system. To ensure that no exposure to humans or the environment can occur the system is fully automated by means of the Yokogawa DCS that controls all aspects of the process, including flow rates, charging of vessels with raw ingredients and monitoring of reaction conditions including temperature, pressure, cycle time and water content. In the event of variance in the system warning alarms triggered by internal sensors are tripped in the main control room. The DCS is designed to automatically return the system to normal parameters by means of flow rate of production or loading with ultimate fail safe systems that can immediately stop production by means of independent controls such as hard wired trips, bursting discs, valve closure systems, etc. For example, if the temperature is too high the flow of isobutene addition is reduced or stopped altogether until the system normalises.
Each manufacturing step is follow by sampling analysis starting at the beginning of the operation by water content control before continuing to add catalyst and several intermediates sampling control in order to check the progress of each reaction. All these quality control is under procedure and regularly audited. Where manual sampling is needed, sampling is taken through a pressure sealed screw valve into a sight-glass, with the valve only being released once the suitable seal is made with the vessel. Any QC activities is by means of an internal lab for this control between each main step of the synthesis. Appropriate PPE is worn by operators.
Each operator is fully trained or receives training when he is hired in order to know the manufacturing process. This training is done step by step with a confirmed operator. Following this training there is a knowledge control with check list to evaluate and record the training sessions. The training processes are managed by both production manager and human resource manager. Following the results the new operator is assessed to determine to receive or be denied the authorisation for the process.
During maintenance work or other process investigation there is the log out : tag out processes which are fully documented by internal procedure. All single operation out of normal operation are is derived only following audit processus and formal authorisation to proceed. Appropriate PPE is worn by operators.
All processes are stricly controlled under ISO 9000 procedures. Process Hazard Assessment, Pre-task Hazard Analysis, safety control and maintenance control adhere to all Chemtura and internal country procedures and regulations.
Any waste from alkylation and distillation are segregated to appropriate collectors under closed conditions. In addition, each waste is controlled by quantity including any waste water for washing step (quantity determined and recovered) to establish a bill of material at the finish step to control yield. All waste is removed from site by licensed waste handlers by means of a sealed loading pipe system with suitable valve and drip measures to ensure no release. All waste is disposed by incineration.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Eye/face protection: Safety glasses with side-shields conforming to EN166. Use equipment for eye protection tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or EN 166(EU).
Skin protection: Handle with gloves. Dispose of contaminated gloves after use in accordance with applicable laws and good laboratory practices.
Wash and dry hands. The selected protective gloves have to satisfy the specifications of EU Directive 89/686/EEC and the standard EN 374 derived from it.
Body Protection: Complete suit protecting against chemicals. The type of protective equipment must be selected according to the concentration and amount of the dangerous substance at the specific workplace.
Respiratory protection: For nuisance exposures use type P95 (US) or type P1 (EU EN 143) particle respirator. For higher level protection use type OV/AG/P99 (US) or type ABEK-P2 (EU EN 143) respirator cartridges. Use respirators and components tested and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or CEN (EU).
