From 1998-11-13 to 1999-03-03
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.17 (Oxidising Properties (Solids))
Version / remarks:
OJ No. L383A, 29.12.92
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Batch No.: 960509
Purity: 92.3%
Contact with:
powdered cellulose
Sample tested:
test mixture as specified
Remarks:
70% test substance
Parameter:
burning time of reaction over a distance of 200 mm
Result:
200 s
Sample tested:
reference mixture as specified
Remarks:
60% barium nitrate/cellulose mixture
Parameter:
burning time of reaction over a distance of 200 mm
Result:
81 s

- Preliminary results:

The pile containing the most cellulose burnt most strongly, but as the reaction could not be described as vigorous the full train test was required.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The test item is not oxidising.
Executive summary:

Oxidising properties was determined determines using the methods compared to a reference oxidising substance Barium nitrate as described in EC A 17.

The fastest burning 60% barium nitrate/cellulose mixture had a burning time of 76 s whereas the fastest burning test substance/cellulose mixture from the extended test was 193 s for a mixture containing 70% test substance.

As none of the test mixtures burned more rapidly than the barium nitrate reference mixtures, the test item is not oxidising.

Description of key information

Oxidising properties was determined determines using the methods compared to a reference oxidising substance Barium nitrate as described in EC A 17.

The fastest burning 60% barium nitrate/cellulose mixture had a burning time of 76 s whereas the fastest burning test substance/cellulose mixture from the extended test was 193 s for a mixture containing 70% test substance.

As none of the test mixtures burned more rapidly than the barium nitrate reference mixtures, the test item is not oxidising.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Oxidising properties: EC A17, non oxidising

The fastest burning 60% barium nitrate/cellulose mixture had a burning time of 76 s whereas the fastest burning test substance/cellulose mixture from the extended test was 193 s for a mixture containing 70% test substance.

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.14.2., the substance should not be classified as oxidising solid.
