water solubility
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
results derived from a (Q)SAR model, with limited documentation / justification, but validity of model and reliability of prediction considered adequate based on a generally acknowledged source
Remarks:
Danish (Q)SAR Database, http://qsar.food.dtu.dk
Justification for type of information:
The literature reference of Yalkowsky 1992 is mentioned in the Danish QSAR database.
The database is developed by the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, with support from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, the Nordic Council of Ministers and the European Chemicals Agency.

DL-alanine is very water soluble

Description of key information

According to different values stated in two handbooks water solubility of D,L-alanin is in mean at 25 °C 157 g/L. The different stated values are all quite similar (please refer to 'Additional information'). The mean experimental value is supported by a theoretically derived water solubility.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
157 g/L
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

CRC, Yalkowsky:

According to the CRC Handbook of aqueous solubility data, the water solubility of DL-Alanine is at 25 °C stated with different values (based on the specific source). In conclusion the arithmetic mean was chosen to state a definitive value:

(147.8 g/L + 142.2 g/L + 142.4 g/L + 143.2 g/L + 169.3 g/L + 136.3 g/L) / 5 = 146.9 g/L

CRC, Lange:

According to the CRC Lange's Handbook of chemistry , the water solubility of DL-Alanine is 167g/L at 25 °C.

Banerjee (1996), UNIFAC-estimated

The water solubility was calculated using an UNIFAC-based algorithm. A solubility of 1.5 - 3.8 M (133.7 - 338.6 g/L) was calculated for D,L-Alanine in the temperature range of 10 - 80 °C.
