Additional information
The toxicity of dizinc pyrophosphate to freshwater algae was tested according to OECD guideline 201 (GLP). The test was conducted with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as test organism. The algae were exposed to nominal substance concentrations of 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 and 12.0 mg test item/L. The test concentrations were prepared by adding the required amount of test substance to sterile growth medium. The solution was stirred for 24 hours at 20°C and subsequently filtered through a 0.22 µm PES filter. The test solutions were prepared by diluting the stock solution. The concentrations at 0 h and 72 h were analytically verified by ICP-MS and ICPOES. The geometric mean measured concentrations were 0.043, 0.089, 0.190, 0.411 and 0.784 mg test item/L corresponding to 0.018, 0.038, 0.081, 0.176 and 0.336 mg Zn/L. A significant inhibition of the algal growth rate was observed. The determined EC50(72 h) was 0.233 mg test item /L (meas. geom. mean). The reported EC10(72 h) is 0.094 mg/test item/L (meas. geom. mean); the NOEC (72 h) is 0.043 mg test item/L (meas. geom. mean).
A second studyon the toxicity of dizinc pyrophosphate following OECD guideline 201 is available. The test was conducted with Desmodesmus subspicatus as test organism. The algae were exposed for 72 hours to nominal test substance concentrations of 1.0, 1.6, 2.5, 4.0, 6.3 and 10 mg/L. The test solutions were prepared separately by adding the required amount of test item to the test medium and subsequent shaking of the mixture for 24 hours. The water soluble fraction was separated by filtering (membrane filtration). Analytical dose verification was not performed. Based on the algal growth rate an EC(L)50 (72 h) of 4.7 mg/L (nominal) was determined. The determined NOEL (72 h) was < 1.0 mg/L (nominal).
Based on the test results dizinc pyrophosphate is considered very toxic to aquatic algae with long lasting effects.
