Description of key information
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the test cannot be performed, as the substance decomposes in water by hydrolysis.
By calculation a log Pow is estimated to be 4.65.
For the hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid the octanol-water partition coefficient was determined according to the OECD TG 117 yielding a log Kow of 3.2 at pH 1 and 25°C.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Log Kow (Log Pow):
- 3.2
- at the temperature of:
- 25 °C
Additional information
Due to rapid hydrolysis of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride in water the determination of the logarithmic octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow) is technically not feasible.
Therefore, the log Kow for the substance was predicted using the QSAR calculation of the Estimation Program Interface (EPI) Suite v 4.1. The log Kow was estimated to be 4.65. The result relate to the unaffected molecule of the substance as any decomposition (e.g. hydrolysis) of the substance is not taken into account by the program. The predicted value can be considered reliable yielding a useful result for further assessment.
Additionally, the log Kow of the hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid is provided.
At the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Japan, the partition coefficient (log Pow) of tetrachlorophthalic acid was determined according to the OECD TG 117. A log Pow of 3.2 at pH 1 and ambient temperature was obtained. No further details of test conditions, e.g. the temperature are reported. It is assumed that the experiment was conducted at ambient temperature (25°C). However, the source is expected to be valid.
