Description of key information

Ethanethiol has a measured OH reaction rate of 4.5 +/- 0.5 E-11 cm3 s-1 at 300K and 4.4 +/- 0.4 E-11 cm3 s-1 at 313K. This corresponds to a half-life of 0.36 days in air based on REACH defaults (REACH Technical Guidance Chapter R.16, ECHA 2012), calculated in EUSES v2.1.2. The reaction rate observed in the experiment falls within the range of reaction rates available in published literature for ethanethiol. The results from literature indicate a range of 2.7 E-11 cm3 s-1 (MacLeod 1983) to 4.65 E-11 cm3 s-1 (Wine 1984) for the reaction of ethanethiol with OH radicals.

Additional information

Barnes (1986) is a non-GLP, non-guideline published study, which follows scientific principles. The methods used were well described and were tested using the reaction of n-butane, n-hexane and propene to OH relative to the reaction of ethene with OH. The authors also compared the results of the test to available literature values. The study is considered reliable and suitable for use for this endpoint.

The results of Barnes (1986) are supported by two other studies. Barnes (1987) is a non-GLP, non-guideline study, with sound scientific principles, analytical monitoring and a control group. Atkinson (1989) is a review paper that includes and extends previous review articles by the author and provides some general information about the experimental methods and conditions. This paper is considered Klimisch score 4, unassignable, as it has insufficient information for evaluation.
