Description of key information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observation, the chemical phosphorus tribromide was observed to be colourless hazy liquid in appearance.
Freezing point:
The Freezing point determination of Phosphorus tribromide (CAS No.7789-60-8) was done using crushed ice and salt. No freezing was observed up to -13.12°C.
Hence, the freezing point was inferred to be less than -13.12 °C at 981.7 hPa.
Boiling point:
The boiling point determination of Phosphorus tribromide (CAS No. 7789-60-8) was done following OECD Guideline 103 and according to the method of Siwoloboff. The test was conducted in replicates and mean boiling point was determined to be 174.5°C at 976.1 hPa.
Density:
The density of test item Phosphorus tribromide (CAS No. 7789-60-8)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to IS 4730 : 1994 (Reaffirmed 2010) – Method for Determination of Density of Liquids (First Revision) the using glass pyknometer .The mean density of test item was determined to be 2.6249 g/cm³ at 20°C and 976.0 hPa.
Particle Size Distribution:
The study does not need to be conducted because the test chemical is marketed or used in a non- solid or granular form.
Phosphorus tribromide was observed to be colourless hazy liquid in appearance. Hence, this endpoint is considered for waiver.
Vapor Pressure:
Data from various handbooks and authoritative databases suggests that the experimental vapor pressure of Phosphorous tribromide at 47.8 deg C was 1333.238 Pa.
Partition Coefficient:
The study does not need to be conducted since the substance is inorganic. Phosphorus tribromide is an inorganic, colourless hazy liquid in appearance.
Hence, this endpoint was considered for waiver.
Water Solubility:
Phosphorus tribromide reacts violently with water evolving hydrogen bromide.Hence, this endpoint was considered for waiver.
Surface tension:
From the authoritative database, the surface tension of Phosphorus tribromide (7789-60-8) was determined to be 0.0458 N/m at 24 degree C.Supported by reaxy summary the surface tension of Phosphorus tribromide (7789-60-8) was determined to be 45.8 g.s-2 at 25 degree C.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of Phosphorus tribromide (CAS No. 7789-60-8)was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted and flash point was found to be 171°C at 976.1hPa. Based on criteria mentioned in CLP regulation the chemical has flash point >than 60 degree C hence the substance was considered to be non-flammable.
Autoflammability:
Phosphorus tribromide did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°Cpressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Phosphorus tribromide is not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid.
Explosiveness:
The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties
Oxidising properties:
The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidising properties and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
pH:
The pH determination of test itemPhosphorus tribromide (CAS No. 7789-60-8 )was done following OECD guideline 122. The pH of 1% w/v aqueous solution was measured with the help of pH meter and the mean pH was observed to be1.0 at 28°C.
Viscosity:
The viscosity determination of Test item Phosphorus tribromide (CAS No. 7789-60-8 )was done as per the test guideline OECD 114 using Redwood Viscometer No. 1. Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of Test item at 20°C and 40°C is 15.0480 mm²/sec and 13.4640 mm²/s, respectively. Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of Test item at 20°C and 40°C is 39.4859 mPa.S and 35.3295 mPa.S, respectively.
