Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Interpretation of results:
- non explosive
- Remarks:
- Migrated information
- Conclusions:
- Based on Items 1 (reactive groups) and 2 (oxygene balance) , ZP- TIX 1014 is not to be classified as explosive material and no experimental determination according to the EC test guidellne A.14 has to be performed. The result of item 3 (calorimetric test) Is not consldered relevant for this substance as there are no sharp peaks and the compound does not contaln chemlcal groups associated with explosive properties.
Thus it can be concluded beyond a reasonable doubt. that ZP- TIX 1014 is not a potential explosive and does not have a potential for rapid energy release. Nevertheless. this judgement is in respect to classification; it does not necessarily mean that any processing hazards can be discounted. - Executive summary:
An Expert Statement was written by RCC Ltd. The explosive properties of ZP-TIX 1014 were estimated based on the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (Manual of Tests and Criteria, Annex 6, Orange Book, 3rd edition, 1999) where a set of criteria is compiled to Identify materials being potential explosives.
1. Reactive Groups:
The test item is a mixture of several closely related compounds where the number of C¬atoms in the alkyl chain varies between ten and fourteen.
The appraisal of the molecular structure indicates no risk of rapid decomposition. ZP- TIX 1014 does not contain any of the structural features mentioned In the UN Recommendations. The occurrence of other chemical groups associated with explosive properties as described In the literature 1 was also considered. No such groups were present.
2. Oxygen Balance:
The oxygen balance can only be estimated roughly based on the equation given in the UN Recommendations as ZP-TIX 1014 contains other elements than CHO. Taking these three elements Into consideration, the oxygen balance is below -200 (i.e. -236 to -252 depending on the length of the alkyl group).
3. Calorimetric Tests
The exothermic decomposition energy was determined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry in a closed. gold plated high pressure vessel (DSC). No sharp peaks were observed. Three very flat peaks were detected between room temperature and 500°C. which makes the precise integration of peak areas difficult. The total of their decomposition energy (dHDecdetermined between room temperature and 500°C) was found to be about 500 J/g or above, thus probably exceeding the UN limit of 500 J/g. The calorimetric test is of special importance for the evaluation of compounds containing chemical groups associated with explosive properties (see item 1). which is not the case for the present test item.
