Description of key information

Barium nitrate is considered to have oxidising properties based on the use of this substance as a positive control substance in the EC A.17 test guideline. In that respect the substance is applied in this test system on a routine basis.

Barium nitrate is considered to have oxidising properties based on the use of this substance as a positive control substance in the EC A.17 test guideline. In that respect the substance is applied in this test system on a routine basis and indicates a border: substances reacting less vigorous in the test compared to barium nitrate are concluded not to have oxidising properties.

It is recognised that the oxidising properties of a solid also depend on its purity and particle size. Non-oxidising impurities might reduce oxidising properties of the substance; the registration substance however shows a high analytical purity. Furthermore, smaller particles enable a more intimate contact between the solid oxidiser and a combustible solid and hence the smaller the particle size, the higher the oxidising capability of the solid. Although the batch of the registration substance tested revealed particle sizes in the range of 0.370 – 0.880 mm, being above the required particle size for barium nitrate as a positive control in the EC A.17 test (< 0.125 mm), from a precautionary point of view, the registration substance is considered to have oxidising properties.

 

Justification for classification or non-classification

DSD: barium nitrate is considered to have oxidising properties based on the use of this substance as a positive control in the EC A.17 test and should thus be classified as an oxidizer (symbol "O"; R8 Contact with combustible material may cause fire).

CLP: barium nitrate is considered to have oxidising properties based on the use of this substance as a positive control in the EC A.17 test; this information does however not allow for assigning the correct hazard category. As barium nitrate is used to distinguish between substances which do / do not have oxidising properties and hence is a borderline by definition, hazard category 2 (H272; May intensify fire; oxidiser) is assigned for precautionary reasons.
