- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- - Name of test material (as cited in study report): Styrene
- Analytical purity: no data
Method
- Type of population:
- other: private and occupational
- Ethical approval:
- not applicable
- Subjects:
- - Number of subjects exposed: 1
- Sex: male
- Age: 40 - Clinical history:
- - History of allergy or casuistics for study subject or populations:
A 40-year-old man had asthmatic bronchitis as a child and has always had dry skin, but no atopic dermatitis. For 20 years, his work has involved repairing and maufacturing machines in a food factory. At times the skin on his fingertips has been dry and fissured. Owing to this condition he was referred to the clinic. 2 years ago after repairing his own car with plastic padding he developed acute vesicular hand dermatitis. - Controls:
- no data
- Route of administration:
- dermal
- Details on study design:
- TYPE OF TEST(S) USED: patch test (epicutaneous test)
Tests with Styrene:
first test: Styrene (5% v/v in MEK)
second test: Styrene (0.1% v/v in MEK)
third test: patch test with Styrene, at least with 2 concentrations: 0.001% w/v and 0.0001% w/v
fourth test: Styrene (0.01%)
Parallel several tests were done with other components of the plastic padding and inhibitors of styrene polymerisation
Results and discussion
- Results of examinations:
- Patch testing with an internationally agreed series and with polymerisation inhibitors which are added to styrene gave negative reactions. However, there was a positive reaction with styrene itself.
