- Remarks:
- Data from peer reviewed handbooks is considered acceptable and a trusted source. In this reference, data for physical constants have been taken from many sources, including both compilations and the primary literature. Where conflicts were found, the value deemed most reliable was chosen. Although peer-reviewed, the reference does not include information on material and methods.

Description of key information
Data available from four handbooks
- Iodine is reported as a bluish-black, lustrous solid (CRC Handbook, 2005; Merck Index, 2001),
- grayish-black solid with metallic luster (Hawley's, 2007 ; Sax's, 1999)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Physical state at 20°C and 1013 hPa:
- solid
Additional information
Iodine is reported as a bluish-black , lustrous solid (CRC Handbook, 2005; Merck Index, 2001), or as a grayish-black solid with metallic luster (Hawley's, 2007 ; Sax's, 1999). Substance is marketed in granular form as prills or flakes. Based on all information, iodine can be described as bluish/greyish-black solid prills or flakes with metallic luster.
