Description of key information

The 72 h EC50 of castor oil, dehydrated for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined to be > 100 mg/L. The NOEC and the LOEC were > 100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L

Additional information

A study was conducted to assess the acute toxicity of castor oil, dehydrated to the freshwater green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata according to OECD Guideline 201 and EC Method C.3 under static conditions. The study included two treatment groups, each containing 5000 algal cells per mL test medium. The growth of the algae was determined after 72 h. Due to the low limit of water solubility of the test substance, a Water Accomodated Fraction (WAF) with a nominal loading rate of 100 mg /L and a control were tested. Analytical dose verification was conducted using the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) method. Under the test conditions, the 72 h EC50 of the test substance for P. subcapitata was determined to be > 100 mg/L. The NOEC and the LOEC were > 100 mg/L.
