For the UVCB submission substance, information on environmental fate and pathways is fragmentary.
As experimentally not feasible, experimental data on hydrolysis are lacking (waiving).
According to a test on ready biodegradability according to OECD 301 B (CO2 evolution) the UVCB was degraded by 26.5% (average of 2 replicates) and therefore failing the criteria for ready biodegradability. Due to exposure considerations, further tests on biodegradation have not been performed (waiving based on Annex XI 3.2. (b)).
Experimental data on bioaccumulation are lacking. Based on exposure considerations, data on bioaccumulation are not necessary (waiving). Waiving is based on Annex XI 3.2. (b).
Calculated data on transport and distribution are available. In conclusion of the results of a weight of evidence approach on the log Koc-values of the main constituent of the UVCB submission substance (dimethyl terephthalate) as well as 7 minor constituents of relevance, the Koc-value as calculated for the main constituent dimethyl therephthalate by KOCWIN-software version 2.00 is deemed most relevant and representative for the UVCB substance as a whole (log Koc = 2.564, Koc = 366.4 L/kg).
According to the REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment part R.7A, "substances with a Koc below 500 -1000 L/kg are generally unlikely to adsorb zu sediment". As this holds true not only for the main constituent of the UVCB but also for the minor constituents of relevance (Koc-range: 42.1 - 916.2 L/kg), partitioning to sediment and soil is most probably of minor importance. The UVCB submission substance is not readily biodegradable, however was not inhibitory to sewage sludge microorganisms. As some biodegradation had been observed (26.5% on average within 28 days), at least some of the constituents may be biodegradable. According to OECD SIDS document on Dimethyl Terephthalate, the main constituent of the UVCB submission substance, dimethyl terephthalate is readily biodegradable (84% MITI).
