Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Emergency measure - Inhalation: Not considered to be a direct inhalation hazard, but if dust
is inhaled, move to area of fresh air and give artificial
respiration if breathing has stopped. If there are signs of
discomfort, seek medical advice. Show copy of safety data
sheet or label to medical staff.
(Note: if in contact with dust, ensure that eyes and skin
are suitably cleaned as appropriate)
Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse immediately with large volumes of water for 10-15
minutes. Seek medical attention. Show copy of safety data
sheet or label to the medical staff.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with water and mild soap or detergent. If signs of
discomfort, seek medical attention. Remove contaminated
clothing and wash thoroughly before re-use.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: If subject is conscious, rinse mouth thoroughly and then
drink plenty of water. If signs of discomfort, seek medical
advice. Show copy of safety data sheet or label to medical
staff.
Fire-fighting measures
Recommended extinguishing agent: Water sprayjet, foam, CO2, dry powder.
Product arising from burning: Unknown (COx, NOx, SOx)
Product determined by test: N
Protective equipment: Full protective equipment including self-contained breathing
apparatus, suitable gloves, goggles and face protection.
Accidental release measures
Emergency measures in case of spillage: Collect material while minimising dust generation (through
use f damp mop or other cleaning equipment), place in a
suitably labelled container and dispose of in accordance
with local regulations. Residues and minor spills may be
washed with water to process sewer, if allowable under
national or local regulations.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirator,
suitable gloves and eye protection should be worn.
Handling and storage
Handling: As the substance exists in the dry form, precautions should
be taken to reduce the possibility of dust formation.
Suitable ventilation should be applied to the working area.
The use of respiratory, hand and eye protection is
recommended.
Respiratory protection: Protective mask (UNI 8960, DIN
3181/1-2) equipped with dust filter (UNI 8962/8963, DIN
3181/1-2).
Hand protection: gloves (neoprene, rubber or other suitable
gloves).
Eye protection: goggles/face shield.
Storage: Store in a cool, dark place.
Avoid contact with combustible materials and with strong
base and acid.
Store in fibre drums with double polyethylene bags.
Ensure containers are properly labelled.
Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Packed in fibre drums, UN approved.

Stability and reactivity
Danger other than fire: None envisaged.
Chemical reaction with water: No hazardous reaction envisaged.
Dust explosion: No test data available. However, as with most organic
materials, a suspended dust cloud of this material may
ignite if subjected to a strong ignition source or high
voltage.
Dust explosion determined by test: N
Disposal considerations
Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance is consumed during use and there is no
possibility of recovery or recycling of the used substance.
Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: GCLE is reactive with alkaline water solution and extremely
reactive at the pre-treatment temperature. Bio treatment
after the caustic reaction can provide good degradation.
Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Recommended only for small quantities.
Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Incineration is the recommended method of destruction
especially for large quantities.
Recommended temperature is 1200 °C for >= 2 secs and a
residual O2 level of not less than 6%.
Code: A663
Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Small quantities possible pending the PEC determined in the
Risk Assessment.
Industry - Possibility of destruction - other: None recommended.
Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance is an intermediate in the synthesis of a
pharmaceutical. Hence, the substance will not enter the
public domain.
