Description of key information

In this 72-h algal growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata the EC50 value based on growth rate was determined to be greater than 100 mg/L for 25.09 % sodium ethylene sulphonate. The overall NOEC was determined to be 0.3 mg/L. All results were based on nominal concentrations. 
Based on this study, the derived EC50 for 100 % sodium ethylenesulphonate was greater than 25.09 mg/L. The EC10 and NOEC value are 1.27 mg/L and 0.08 mg/L, respectively.

Additional information

The toxicity of sodium vinyl sulphonate solution (IIBAT(b), 2010) on fresh water green alga, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined according to OECD guideline 201. Based on the results of range finding study, the main study was conducted at 0.3, 1.0, 3.1, 9.8, 31.3 and 100 mg/L of sodium vinyl sulphonate solution (IIBAT (b), 2010)The test was conducted with three replicates per test item concentration and six replicates for control. Results of the study revealed that sodium vinyl sulphonate solution at tested concentrations from 1.0 to 100 mg/L shows a maximum growth inhibition of 89.56% in yield and 42.49% inhibition in growth rate. Analytical verifications of sodium vinyl sulphonate solution in the OECD TG 201 medium was carried out in 9.8, 31.3 and 100 mg/L treatments. The mean recovery values were 97.44 % at test initiation and 67.24 % at test termination. The recovery percentage of test item in the exposure culture medium during 0-72 hours was more than 80 % in all the analysed concentrations. Therefore, the biological results (EyC50 and ErC50) calculations were made based on the nominal test item concentrations. Based on the study, EyC50 (0-72 h), ErC50 (0 -72 h), and NOEC of sodium vinyl sulphonate solution were determined as follows:

EyC50 (0-72 h) - 10.12 mg/L (95 % confidence limit: 9.22 - 11.11 mg/L)

ErC50 (0-72 h) - > 100 mg/L NOEC (0-72 h)= 0.3 mg/L Based on this study, the derived EyC50 and ErC50 for 100 % sodium ethylenesulphonate was 2.5 mg/L and greater than 25.09 mg/L, respectively.

The ErC10 was 1.28 mg/L and the NOEC value was 0.08 mg/L.
