Screening test on self-ignition according to Grewer:
about 8ml of the test substance and the same amount of graphite powder as reference substance are heated in a fine-mesh wire basket in a preheated air stream with 1.8 K/min. The temperature inside the substance is compared with that inside the reference. In case the substance melts during the test, an additional measurement with a 1:1 mixture of the substance with kieselgur is performed. Classification as self heating can be excluded, when the onset temperature exceeds 220°C. The onset temperature is the temperature when an exothermic behaviour compared with the reference is detected.
