Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
The crown ether, S.typhimurium and S9 mix or buffer were mixed with top agar and poured onto minimal glucose plates as described by Maron and Ames (1983). In experiments where S9 was not used, the buffer was omitted from the top agar mixture. Duplicate plates were used for each concentration and each experiment was performed at least twice. The plates were incubated at 37°C for 48 h. The his-independent (his+) colonies arising on the plates were counted by hand using a colony counter (American Optical). The data was then evaluated.
