Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
22 SEP 2021 - 12 OCT 2021
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Version / remarks:
2019
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
In the preliminary screening test, the test item could not be ignited. Based on the results of the preliminary screening test, no burning rate rest was performed. The test item is not considered as a flammable solid.
Executive summary:

The test was performed according to the UN manual N.1 under GLP compliance. In the preliminary screening test, the test item could not be ignited. Based on the results of the preliminary screening test, no burning rate rest was performed. The test item is not considered as a flammable solid. Thus test item has not to be classified according to EU GHS criteria.

Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:

Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.4 (Test method for self-heating substances)
Version / remarks:
2019
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Test procedure:
100 mm sample cube at 140°C
Max. temp. reached:
140
Induction time (h):
24
Result:
negative outcome (no effect observed)

The test item was exposed to air at the temperature of 140 °C in a 100 mm wire mesh cube. A negative result was obtained; therefore, no further testing was necessary.

Based on this result, the test item should not be classified as a self-heating substance.

Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
A negative result was obtained; therefore, no further testing was necessary.
Based on this result, the test item should not be classified as a self-heating substance.
Executive summary:

The self-heating properties of the test item was assessed according to the UN manual N.4 under GLP compliance. The test item was exposed to air at the temperature of 140 °C in a 100 mm wire mesh cube. A negative result was obtained; therefore, no further testing was necessary. Based on this result, the test item should not be classified as a self-heating substance.

Description of key information

Flammability

The test was performed according to the UN manual N.1 under GLP compliance. In the preliminary screening test, the test item could not be ignited. Based on the results of the preliminary screening test, no burning rate rest was performed. The test item is not considered as a flammable solid. Thus test item has not to be classified according to EU GHS criteria.

Flammability_self heating substances

The self-heating properties of the test item was assessed according to the UN manual N.4 under GLP compliance. The test item was exposed to air at the temperature of 140 °C in a 100 mm wire mesh cube. A negative result was obtained; therefore, no further testing was necessary. Based on this result, the test item should not be classified as a self-heating substance.

Flammability, contact with water

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids. Also the test material does not react with water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the test material exhibit no risk for flammability on contact with water.

Flammability, pyrophoric solids

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and the test material does not contain structural components associated with pyrophoricity mentioned in the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance, chapter R.7.1.10.3, page 123. Therefore, it can be concluded that the test material exhibit no risk for pyrophoricity.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

In the preliminary screening test, the test item could not be ignited. Based on the results of the preliminary screening test, the main test is unnecessary, because no ignition was observed. The test substance is not a readily combustible solid in the sense of Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.10 and Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.

Based on the physical state, the structural elements and the melting point the substance has neither to be classified as flammable in contact with air, nor as pyrophoric solid, nor as self-heating substance (as shown in the test).
