Conclusions:
The log Pow of Maltitol was determined as -3.87 ± 0.03 using the shake flask method.
Executive summary:

The coefficient of partition of Maltitol was determined according to the EU method A.8 and OECD 107, and in compliance with GLP.

Since the maltitol is highly hydrophilic, the shake flask method was used to measure its partition between the aqueous phase and the n-octanol phase.

Each phase was first saturated with the other solvent. The concentration of the starting water test item solution was equal to 3.00 g/L. Three assays, each in duplicate, were performed using different ratio of solvent volumes (2:1; 1:1 and 1:2).  Each mixture was shaken using a magnetically stirrer for about 15 minutes at 24 °C ± 1 °C. The temperature during the partition phase was equal to 24 °C ± 1 °C.

Then two phases were separated and the maltitol concentration was analysed in each solvent using the ionic chromatography with amperometric detection. The analysis method was demonstrated to satisfy the SANCO/3030/99 rev.4 regarding the specificity, linearity, accuracy and precision (Report 18 -918023 -004).

The pH of the aqueous phase solutions after the partition was between 6.68 and 6.80 at 22.0 °C.

The mean log Kow is equal to -3.87 ± 0.03 and the relative standard deviation = 0.76%.

The log Kow study is classified as acceptable, and satisfies the guideline requirements of the EU method A.8 and OECD 107.
