TEST ORGANISM
- Common name: freshwater algae
- Source (laboratory, culture collection): STILLMEDADOW, Inc. cultures
- Age of inoculum (at test initiation): mass culture initiated 3-7 ± 1 days prior to dosing
- Method of cultivation: Parents and daughter cultures are continuously maintained at STILLMEADOW, Inc. Three days prior to testing, 1000 mL of autoclaved algal stock culture medium (Woods Hole) was inoculated. This new mass culture was then placed in a ~25°C environmental chamber and maintained on continuous aeration. All procedures were conducted aseptically.

Reported statistics and error estimates:
The NOEC and IC50 were determined by a commercially available statistical program (ToxCalc Version 5.0 TM). Several models are available for IC50 determination: Probit, Trimmed Speatman-Karber, and Linear Interpolation. The most appropriate model was selected for the determination in this case.
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
A 96-h growth inhibition test with the unicellular green alga Selenastrum capricornutum was performed with the test substance according to the approved protocol SOPs and OPPTS, series 850, section 5400. The test concentration of the test item that resulted in 50% inhibition (IC50) was determined to be 127.10 mg/L with 95% C.L. of 0.00-186.58 mg/L. As the NOEC was determined to be <25 mg/L (the lowest tested concentration), the test item may be hazardous to aquatic algae.. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restrictions.

Description of key information

The study by Rodrigue (2007), investigating the acute toxicity of the test substance to algae according to the approved protocol SOPs and OPPTS, series 850, section 5400, was considered as the key study for endpoint coverage. The 72-h NOEC and 72-h IC50 for growth rate were determined to be < 25 mg/L (the lowest tested concentration) and 127.1 mg/L (> 100 mg/L) respectively. As the NOEC was determined to be <25 mg/L (the lowest tested concentration),  the test item may be hazardous to aquatic algae. The results of the test can be considered reliable without restrictions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment
