In every ignition test, a small portion of the flammable substance under test was introduced into an open conical flask (Erlenmeyer flask'). The flask was heated in an electric furnace and it was observed whether ignition takes place at the prevailing temperature. Finally, any vaporizable components left in the flask were blown out with air. A repeat test was performed using fresh ignition vessels.

The barometric pressure was 992 hPa at the time of the test runs.
