Description of key information

With regard to irritation there are no data on the pigment as such, however there are no reported incidents at the production site concerning irritation (regardless of exposure route), nor corrosive properties.

As for the important components of the pigment, there is a quite large number of studies on magnetite and hematite showing that neither of them are irritating to the skin or eye. As for sparingly soluble lead compounds, experimental studies on animals as well as a huge number of occupational studies have shown that sparingly soluble lead compounds do not exhibit irritant or corrosive properties in acute inhalation studies. There are no reports of respiratory irritation in occupationally exposed workers.

In conclusion for the pigment no skin or eye irritation observed in experimental studies conducted according to Annex V test guidelines. No evidence of respiratory irritation in rat acute toxicity studies up to 5mg/L and no reports of respiratory irritaion following extensive use of this substance in the workplace.
