- Executive summary:
Study for performed for the classification of division 4.2 the test item was tested according to division 4.2 (self-heating substances) according to the UN test N.4, described in the “Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria”, 5threvised edition 2009.
An oven is used with hot-air circulation and an inner volume greater than 9 L capable of controlling the internal temperature with an accuracy of ± 2 °C. A cube-form sample container of stainless steel wire netting (edge length for tests No. 1, 2 and 4: 10 cm and for test No. 2: 2.5 cm, defined mesh size: 0.053 mm) with their top surface open, is used. The container is placed into a protective cube-form container of stainless steel (mesh size 0.595 mm) which is slightly larger. The test item in the commercially available form is filled into the sample container up to the brim and the container is subjected to several gentle impacts. After sedimentation of the sample, the container is refilled up to the brim. The excess substance is scraped off to the level of the brim. The protective cube with the filled sample cube is placed into another wire netting basket (15 cm x 15 cm x 25 cm) to avoid effects caused by air circulation.
The temperatures in the middle of the sample and the oven are measured with nickel/chromium-nickel thermocouples and recorded continuously. The oven temperature is adjusted to the test temperature. It is observed whether spontaneous self-ignition occurs or whether the sample temperature exceeds the oven temperature by 60 K or more.
548.75 g of the test item were filled in the sample container. Heating up the oven the test item temperature followed the oven temperature. The test item reached the oven temperature of 140°C after approximately 10 hours. The test item temperature followed the oven temperature of 140 °C for 38 h experimental time.
After the measurement, the mesh wire basket contained approximately 0.6 wt.-% less test item than at the start. After the test, the test item was checked visually. The colour of the test item remained unchanged.
The maximum temperature of the test item was 140 °C.
The temperature of the test item did not exceeded 200 °C. Due to this result, no further tests were necessary.
Due to the negative result in a wire netting cube of 10 cm edge length at 140 °C the test item has not to be classified as “self-heating substance” according to chapter 2.11 of the Globally harmonized system of classification and labelling of chemicals.

Individual results
UN test N.4 for self-heating substances
Description of key information
In a pre-test according to guideline VDI 2263 sheet 1 (Grewer-Oven), self-ignition was observed at 180 °C. Therefore an additional test was performed according to UN test N.4, described in the “Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria”, 5th revised edition 2009. In this test no relevant self-heating was observed in a wire netting cube of 10 cm edge length at 140 °C.
Due to the negative test result, the test item has not to be classified as “self-heating substance”.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Autoflammability / Self-ignition temperature at 101 325 Pa:
- 180 °C
Additional information
The test item was tested according to the UN test N.4, described in the “Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria”, 5th revised edition 2009.
A negative result was obtained in a wire netting cube of 10 cm edge length at 140 °C therefore the test item should not be classified as “self-heating substance” according to chapter 2.11 of the Globally harmonized system of classification and labelling of chemicals.
