Description of key information

Isopropenyl acetate may be harmful to aquatic algae under the conditions of the acute test with Desmosdesmus subspicatus under the conditions used as it shows an EC50 of > 85.8 mg/l.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
85.8 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
3.44 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of Isopropenyl acetate to the freshwater green algal species Desmodesmus subspicatus was assessed in an Algal Growth Inhibition Test. This study encompassed 7 treatment groups and a control with three replicates per test concentration and six replicates for the control. At test start 60 mL of the test concentrations were inoculated with 5000 algal cells per mL test medium and defined volumes of the algal suspensions were sampled after 24, 48 and 72 hours for determination of cell densities by spectrophotometrical measurement. In order to avoid volatilization the glass flask were filled up as full as practicable with test medium and closed with a conical stopper. The 72-hour EC50 calculated on the basis of mean measured values was > 85.8 mg test item/L for the growth rate and 9.19 mg test item/L for the yield. The corresponding EC10 values were calculated to be 3.44 and 1.00 mg test item/L for the growth rate and yield, respectively. The 72-hour NOEC was determined to be 0.25 mg test item/L for both parameters. The 72-hour LOEC was determined to be 0.77 mg test item/L for both parameters.
