- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- August - November 2014
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
- Qualifier:
- equivalent or similar to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- The test methods are described in another document. This does not impair the conclusion of the test results.
The principles of the test methods including their deviations to the guideline are described in detail in the field "any other information on materials and methods". - GLP compliance:
- not specified
- Key result
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- N-Isobutyryl-thiourea can be ignited but the ignition process was terminated rapidly. Therefore N-Isobutyryl-thiourea is considered to be not highly flammable.
- Executive summary:
The tests were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline A.10.
N-Isobutyryl-thiourea could be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance. N-Isobutyryl-thiourea was melting and the ignition process was terminated rapidly.
N-Isobutyryl-thiourea could not be ignited by an open gas flame held onto the substance for approx. 10 -15 seconds.
N-Isobutyryl-thiourea could not be ignited when put into a red heated iro bowl for 60 seconds. In a mixture with potassium nitrate burning off with deflagration could be observed.
Therefore it is concluded that N-Isobutyryl-thiourea could be ignited but is not highly flammable.
Reference
1. N-Isobutyryl-thiourea could be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance. N-Isobutyryl-thiourea was melting and the ignition process was terminated rapidly (“Bewertungszahl” BWZ 2).
2. N-Isobutyrl-thiourea could not be ignited by an open gas flame held onto the substance for approx. 10 -15 seconds ("Bewertungszahl" BWZ 1).
3. N-Isobutyryl-thiourea could not be ignited when put into a red heated iro bowl for 60 seconds ("Bewertungszahl" BWZ 1). In a mixture with potassium nitrate burning off with deflagration could be observed ("Bewertungszahl" BWZ 6). Average "Bewertungszahl" = 3.5.
Description of key information
N-Isobutyryl-thiourea can be ignited but the ignition process was terminated rapidly. Therefore N-Isobutyryl-thiourea is considered to be not highly flammable.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified

Justification for classification or non-classification
Due to the results N-Isobutyryl-thiourea can be excluded from the hazard class "flammable solid" and does not have to be classified.
