Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Inhalation :
- Move the person away from the contaminated area. Make the affected person rest. Obtain medical attention.
Skin contact :
- Use appropriate protective equipment when treating a contaminated person.
- Remove all contaminated clothing and footwear.
- Wash with soap and water immediately and thoroughly for a prolonged period (at least 15 minutes).
- Obtain medical attention.
- Place contaminated clothing in a sealed bag for disposal.
Eye contact :
- Immediately rinse with plenty of running water for a prolonged period, (at least 15 minutes) whilst keeping the eyes wide open.
- Always obtain medical advice immediately, even if there are no symptoms.
Ingestion :
- NEVER attempt to induce vomiting. Do not give anything to drink.
- Always obtain medical attention immediately.
Fire-fighting measures
Suitable Extinguishing media :
- Foam
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
Not suitable extinguishing media :
- Chlorosilanes react vigorously with water. Do not apply water directly to the fire.
- Do not use Alkaline powders.
Specific hazards:
- Highly flammable.
- Vapours are heavier than air and can travel along ground to remote ignition sources.
- Fire releases dense, irritating, and corrosive hydrogen chloride fumes.
Specific fire fighting methods :
- Cool down the containers/equipment exposed to heat with a water spray.
- Do not allow any extinguishing media to enter container.
- In some cases it may be better to let fire burn until expert assistance is obtained. Material may reignite after fire is extinguished.
Vapours may form explosive mixtures with air.
- Determine the need to evacuate or isolate the area according to your local emergency plan.
- Do not put water directly on the fire, however water may be used to knock down the corrosive vapor cloud down wind of fire.
- Apply medium expansion (30:1) AFFF alcohol compatible foam. Applying foam initially will release significant amounts of corrosive hydrogen chloride vapours which will be reduced when uniform blanketing is achieved.
- Applying foam will also release significant amounts of flammable hydrogen gas that can be trapped under the foam blanket.
Protection of fire-fighters :
- Self-contained breathing apparatus.
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions :
- If spillage occurs on the public highway, indicate the danger and notify the authorities (police, fire brigade ).
- Do NOT approach from DOWNWIND.
- NO flames, NO sparks. Eliminate all sources of ignition.
- Do NOT attempt to take action WITHOUT suitable protective equipment.
- Remove all incompatible materials as quickly as possible: alkalis and caustic products.
- Stop the leak. Turn leaking containers leak-side up to prevent the escape of liquid.
- Mechanically ventilate the spillage area, whilst avoiding the formation of explosive concentrations.
Environmental precautions :
- For a large spillage, contain the spillage by bunding.
- Do NOT discharge into drains or rivers.
Methods for cleaning up :
- Collect up the product and place it in a spare container:
- suitably labelled.
- acid-resistant.
- tightly closed.
- equipped with a degassing device.
- Use flame-proof equipment.
- Keep the recovered product for subsequent disposal.
- Absorb non-recoverable liquid with dry sand or dry inert absorbent.
- Do NOT use products which are basic.
- Decontaminate and wash the floor with an appropriate solvent. (non basic/alkaline) then wash with plenty of water.
- Incinerate contaminated materials at an authorized installation.
Handling and storage
Handling technical measures :
- Use Material and equipment suitable for use under explosive conditions.
- Earth the equipment. Blanket with inert gas. Only use materials resistant to strong acids.
- Avoid the build-up of electrostatic charge. Do NOT use compressed air to transfer, discharge or transport the product.
Storage technical measures :
- Take all necessary measures to avoid accidental discharge of products into drains and waterways due to the rupture of containers or transfer systems.
- Store:
- the container tightly closed and dry.
- in a cool, well-ventilated area
- away from any source of heat.
- in an inert atmosphere.
- Store away from incompatible materials.
Packaging materials :
- Steel metal container.
- Steel Rail tanker.
- Do not store in or use glass containers.
- This chlorosilane containing silicon-hydride (Si-H) may slowly evolve hydrogen on storage and should not be repacked without guidance from packaging experts.

Stability and reactivity
Stable at room temperature provided it is not on contact with air.
Hydrolyses at room temperature on contact with humidity.
A fire or explosion hazard arises since highly flammable gas (hydrogen) is released when it is in contact with :
- alkalis and caustic products.
- strong oxidizing agents.
- water, humidity.
- alcohols.
- amines.
- chemical compounds with mobile hydrogen, in the presence of metal salts and complexes.
(Quantity of hydrogen potentially released: 209 l/kg of product).
On combustion forms:
- Carbon oxides (CO + CO2)
- Hydrochloric acid
- Amorphous silica
Disposal considerations
Discharging waste into rivers and drains is forbidden.
Incinerate at a licensed installation if in accordance with local regulations.
Unhydrolysed material can be hydrolysed with excess water and the acid produced neutralised with weak alkali. After hydrolysis, the residue can be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.
For contaminated packaging:
- Allow it to drain thoroughly.
- Rinse with an appropriate solvent.
- Recover the solvent used for rinsing and incinerate at a licensed site in accordance with local regulations.
