Description of key information

Yttrium oxide is not highly flammable. Furthermore, no pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water is expected based on chemical structure and experience during manufacture and use.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

A GLP experimental study, according to EU Method A.10 and scored as Klimisch 1, is selected as a key study and revealed that yttrium oxide is not flammable. Due to the absence of structural alerts, it is highly unlikely that yttrium oxide is flammable in contact to water or in contact with air. Furthermore, under conditions where yttrium oxide is in contact with water or air, no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the above data, yttrium oxide does not require a classification regarding its flammable properties, neither under DSD, nor under CLP or UN GHS.
