Description of key information

A study was performed according to EU Method A.10 Flammability (solids) (Holzschuh O.(2010)) during which it was not possible to ignite the sample in the preliminary test.  In contact with the flame the sample was melting; there was no propagation of the combustion.

2,6-di-tert-Butylphenol is therefore considered not to be highly flammable.

Pyrophoricity

As stated in the REACH Guidance, R7a, the vast majority of substances do not display pyrophoric properties. Those that do display pyrophoric properties fall into a number of broad categories. For example, alkyl aluminium derivatives, alkyl boranes, alkyl haloboranes, alkyl halophosphines, alkyl metals, alkyl phosphines, alkyl silanes, aryl metals, boranes, metal hydrides, complex acetylides freshly-produced finely divided metal powders (aged powders can develop a coating of oxide that prevents further reaction).  A more comprehensive list can be found in Bretherick’s Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards.

2,6-DTBP does not contain any of the functional groups contained within this reference and can therefore be assumed to have no pyrophoric properties.

Flammability on contact with water

The vast majority of substances do not ignite or liberate flammable gases on contact with water. Those that do display these properties fall into a number of broad categories. For example, alkali metals, alkyl aluminium derivatives, alkyl metals, metal hydrides, metal phosphides, certain metal powders. A more comprehensive list can be found in Bretherick’s Handbook of Reactive Chemical Hazards.” (REACH Guidance R7a).  Once again 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol does not contain any of the functional groups detailed in the handbook and should not therefore be considered to be flammable in contact with water.

In accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC and EU CLP (Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008) and based on the obtained data, the criteria for classification for flammability are not met.
