Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Aquatic toxicity data are available for hydrogen sulphide. Phosphorus pentasulphide reacts rapidly with environmental moisture or water, with the formation of hydrogen sulphide and phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid will dissociate into environmentally ubiquitous ionic species, and is likely to be have a positive (nutritive) effect on algal growth, however a negative secondary effect (due to pH change) is possible at high concentrations. Hydrogen sulphide is likely to be the more toxic of the breakdown products of phosphorus pentasulphide and will therefore be relevant for PNEC derivation. Equivalent P2S5 concentrations are derived from H2S concentrations based on the total degradation of P2S5 under aqueous conditions to form five molecules of H2S.

Conclusion on classification

Phosphorus pentasulphide is listed on Annex I of Directive 67/548/EEC with classification as (R50) 'Very toxic to aquatic organisms'. No change to this classification is proposed.
