Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Name:
bis(4-methylbenzoyl) peroxide
Type of composition:
boundary composition of the substance
State / form:
solid: particulate/powder
Reference substance:
bis(4-methylbenzoyl) peroxide
Name:
bis(4-methylbenzoyl) peroxide
Type of composition:
legal entity composition of the substance
State / form:
solid: particulate/powder
Reference substance:
bis(4-methylbenzoyl) peroxide
PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

In a ready biodegradability test is shown that the substance is readily biodegradable and therefore not P or vP.

The substance itself has a log Kow of 4.7, but due to fast hydrolysis p-toluic acid the main degradation product should be evaluated which has a log Kow of 2.44. The substance should therefore not be classified as B or vB.

The lowest EC50 for p-toluic acid is 42 mg/L for invertebrates. The long-term study for invertebrates gave a NOEC of 3.2 mg/L. Both values are above the limits set and p-toluic acid as well as bis(4-methylbenzoyl) peroxide should not be classified T.

The substance does not fulfil any of the screening criteria for either PBT or vPvB and is therefore not classified as such.
