Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

As no hazard to freshwater species was identified, application of the equilibrium assessment method does fail. However, to assess sediment and soil exposure, the lowest EC50 (daphnia >100 mg/l) was used as a basis for an interim freshwater PNEC used as input for the equilibrium method to assess sediment and soil PNECs as follows:

Thus, it can be shown that risks to sediment and soil are negligible.

PNEC sediment

Ksusp-water: 0.295 (according to EUSES)

RHOsusp: 1150 kg/m3(according to the CSA Guidance document equation R10-2)

PNECsediment-freshwater= (Ksusp-water/RHOsusp) * PNECfreshwater*1000

PNECsediment-freshwater= (0.295/1150) * 0.1 mg/L * 1000

PNECsediment-freshwater= 0.0257 mg/kg wwt

PNECsediment-freshwater= 0.118 mg/kg dwt (factor 4.6)

PNECsediment-marine water= (Ksusp-water/RHOsusp) * PNECmarine-water*1000

PNECsediment-marine water= (0.295/1150) * 0.01 mg/L * 1000

PNECsediment-marine water= 0.00257 mg/kg wwt.

PNECsediment-marine water= 0.0118 mg/kg dwt (factor 4.6)

PNEC soil

Ksoil-water: 0.979 (according to EUSES v. 2.1.2)

RHOsoil: 1150 kg/m3 (according to the CSA Guidance document, chapter R.10, May 2008, equation R10-2)

PNECsoil= (Ksoil-water/RHOsoil) * PNECfreshwater*1000

PNECsoil= (0.979/1150) * 0.1 mg/L * 1000

PNECsoil= 0.085 mg/kg wwt

PNECsoil= 0.096 mg/kg soil dwt (factor 1.13)

Conclusion on classification

Based on the results obtained, sodium ethylene sulphonate was not classified and labelled for environmental hazards according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
