Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
Eye injury was recorded in a 10-grade ordinal series and was based upon the degree of corneal necrosis that results from instillation of 0.5 ml of 1% aqueous solution in the eye with results read 24 hours later. Grade 1 is at most a very small area of necrosis resulting from 0.5 ml of undiluted chemical in the eye. Grade 10 indicates a severe burn from 0.5 ml of a 1% solution in water.

Undiluted isopropyl acetate received a Grade 2 score in this assay.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
moderately irritating
Remarks:
Migrated information Criteria used for interpretation of results: EU
Conclusions:
isopropyl acetate received a rating of 2 in this assay.
Executive summary:

Smyth et al (1954) reported Grade 2 corneal necrosis (on a scale of 1 min -10 max) following instillation of undiluted isopropyl acetate into rabbit eyes. This is interpreted to indicate moderate irritation potential.
