Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information
Two screening studies for ready biodegradability were carried out. In the key study from Clarke (2003), the ready biodegradability of the test substance under aerobic conditions was assessed according to OECD TG 301B. The activated sewage sludge micro-organisms were exposed to the test material at a concentration of 10 mg C/L with culture medium in sealed culture vessels in the dark at 21°C for 28 days. Following the recommendations of the International Standards Organisation (ISO 1996) and in published literature, the test material was adsorbed onto granular silica gel prior to dispersion in the test medium in order to aid dispersion of the test material in the test medium and to increase the surface area of the test material exposed to test organisms. The degradation of the test material was assessed by the determination of carbon dioxide produced. Control solutions with inoculum and a reference material (sodium benzoate) together with a toxicity control were used for validation purposes. The test material attained 2% degradation after 28 days and therefore cannot be considered to be readily biodegradable under the strict terms and conditions of OECD TG 301B.

The second test was carried out according to OECD TG 301B and Guideline SEPA, P. R. China No. 301B. The degradation after 28 days was 1.63%. It is concluded that under the stringent conditions of this test no biodegradation is observed. As the conditions of the second study were less well described, this study is used as a supporting study.
