Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for freshwater fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss), invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) for the registration substance, Reaction Mass of bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylphosphonate and (trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylmethylphosphonate.

The relevant short-term values are:

Fish: LC50 (96 h): >100 mg/L (nominal concentration, highest concentration tested).

Daphnia: EC50 (48 h): >100 mg/L; NOEC: 100 mg/L (nominal concentration, highest concentration tested). The test substance was pre-hydrolysed prior to test initiation, with analytical verification confirming complete hydrolysis, therefore the test organisms were exposed to the hydrolysis products of the test substance.

Algae: EC50 (72 h): >100 mg/L; NOEC: 100 mg/L (nominal concentration, highest concentration tested). The test substance was pre-hydrolysed prior to test initiation, with analytical verification confirming complete hydrolysis, therefore the test organisms were exposed to the hydrolysis products of the test substance.

The rapid hydrolysis rate of Reaction Mass of bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylphosphonate and (trimethoxysilylpropyl)methylmethylphosphonate (half-lives of 4 hours and 10 hours for Constituent 1 and Constituent 2 respectively, at pH 7 and 20-25°C) and the preparation method of pre-hydrolysing the test solution in the Daphnia and algal tests, means it is likely that the test organisms in each test were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products, methyl 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl methylphosphonate (HP 1) and bis[3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl] methylphosphonate (HP 2).
