Test guideline
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Part I: Classification procedures, test methods and criteria relating to explosives of Class 1
- Version / remarks:
- Third Revised Edition
- Deviations:
- not specified
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- The assignor requested to carry out the following:
- the UN gap test (detonation)
- The Koenen test (heating under confinement
- the time/pressure test (ignition under confinement)
The detonation properties of Butyl_NENA were determined using the UN gap test, as described in the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Crieteria, third revised condition, test 2(a). A steel tube with a length of 400 mm, a diameter of 48 mm and a wall thickness of 4 mm was used, After introducing the test substance into the tube, the tube was provided with a PMMA gap with a length of 50 mm. The booster charge, which is placed on top of the gap, consists of the RDX/wax (95/5). The booster charge is ignited using a U8 detonator. The test results are assessed on the basis of the fragmentation of the tube.
The sensitivity to heating under confinement of Butyl-NENA, was determined using the Koenen Test, as Described in the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria third revised edition, tests 1(b) and 2 (b). In this test a steel tube is filled with the substance under investigation. The tube is closed with an orifice plate and subsequently subjected to intense heating. The orifice diameter is varied until the limiting orifice diameter at which the tube does not rupture is found. In each test, approximately 27.0 grams of the sample were loaded into the test tube.
Ignition under confinement of Butyl-NENA, was determined using the time/Pressure test (TPT), as described in the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of the Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, third revised edition, tests 2(b)(i) and 2(c)(i). This test is used to determine the effects of igniting the substance under confinement in order to determine if ignition leads to a deflagration with explosive violence. - GLP compliance:
