Description of key information

Bis(methylcyclohexyl) phthalate is not acutely harmful to aquatic organisms but harmful to aquatic organisms at chronic exposure.

Additional information

One short-term toxicity test with the target substance (Bis(methylcyclohexyl) phthalate (CAS 27987-25-3) to aquatic invertebrates is available. This study indicate that the substance is not harmful to aquatic invertebrates at short-term exposure. This is confirmed by short-term toxicity tests with fish, daphnia and algae available for the structurally related source substance Dicyclohexyl phthalate (CAS 84-61-7), which were used in a read across approach in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances.

In addition, long-term toxicity data with the source substance are available for daphnids and algae. The algal test did not indicate the substance to be harmful to algae. However, aquatic invertebrates yielded a 21-d NOEC for reproduction of 0.181 mg/L. Hence, ther source substance is considered to be harmful to aquatic organisms based on chronic exposure. Due to the reasons given in the analogue justification document attached in chapter 13, this assessment is also considered to be true for Bis(methylcyclohexyl) phthalate (CAS 27987-25-3).

Furthermore, data are available for toxicity to microorganisms. A test on respiration inhibition with activated sludge resulted in an 3h-EC10 of > 10000 mg/L indicating that detrimental effects in STPs are not to be expected.
