At liquid–air interfaces, surface tension results from the greater attraction of liquid molecules to each other (due to cohesion) than to the molecules in the air (due to adhesion). Thus, the surface becomes under tension from the imbalanced forces. All calcium borate substances in this category are expected to have the same surface tension properties since they contain the same functional groups and once dissolved in water will dissociate to boric acid and calcium ions. The surface tension measured will therefore be the result of the interactions of the liquid molecules with boric acid and calcium ions. As a result, all calcium borate substances will have the same surface tension value to report. Read-across to the result for calcium metaborate is therefore proposed for all calcium borate substances in this category.
