The substance belongs to the class of monoazo disperse dyes, which are substantially water-insoluble nonionic dyes for application to hydrophobic fibers from aqueous dispersion.
Data on water solubility of Disperse Red 202 and on Similar Substance 01 has been taken into account. In both cases, water solubility was experimetally found to below the LOD/LOQ of the method, i.e. < 1.08 mg/l for Disperse Red 202 and < 5 µg/l for Similar Substance 01.
Furthermore, in the analytical method validation, solubility of Similar Substance 01 in ISO medium (used in the test on daphnids) and 20x AAP medium (used in the test on lemna) was also below the LOQ.
The same behaviour was expected in case of Disperse Red 202.
Overall, the significance to run tests at concentration below LOQ, with no possibility to monitor the presence of test substance, was considered to be low. In addition, the aquatic compartment was not considered as target of the substance toxicity. Details on the read across are available in IUCLID section 13.
Justification for classification
Disperse Red 202 is classified as H413 because, due to the very low solubility, aquatic toxicity is unlikely to occur; however, there are some grounds for concern. This classification includes, for example, poorly soluble substances for which no acute toxicity is recorded at levels up to the water solubility, and which are not rapidly degradable and have an experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, a log Kow ≥ 4), indicating a potential to bioaccumulate. Disperse Red 202 is expected to be not toxic to the aquatic life, it is highly insoluble, it is not biodegradable and has a log Pow of 4.53.
