Glycerol monomyristate (CAS 27214-38-6) is poorly soluble in water (water solubility <12.1 µg/L at 20 °C and pH 6.3), has a moderate to high adsorption potential (log Koc range2 – 5.88, MCI) and is not volatile (vapour pressure: < 0.0001 Pa at 25°C). Experimental data on the biodegradability of the substance are not available.
The assessment of ready biodegradability was based on read-across to the structurally related substances Glycerides, C12-18 di- and tri- (CAS 91744-28-4) and Docosanoic acid, ester with 1,2,3-propanetriol (CAS 77538-19-3) and on QSAR calculations conducted with the main constituents of the target substance (Vega version 1.1.3)
The target and source substances are esters of a tri-functional alcohol (glycerol) with one or more carboxylic (fatty) acid(s) chain(s). The alcohol moiety (glycerol) is common to allanalogue substances.The fatty acid moiety comprises linear saturated carbon chain lengths from C12-C18 (even-numbered) and C22 bound to the alcohol,resulting in mono-, di-, and triesters.The target and the source substances are characterised by comparable physico-chemical properties and an analogue environmental fate. Please refer to the analogue justification for more details on the read-across approach.
Based on the results determined for the source substances, the target substanceGlycerol monomyristateis considered readily biodegradable (≥ 78% in 28 d) according to the OECD criteria. The assumption is supported by QSAR calculations predicting ready biodegradability for two representative constituents of the UVCB substance. Based on the ready biodegradability in combination with the low water solubility and adsorption potential the substance is expected to be extensively eliminated in conventional sewage treatment plants. In the case insoluble chemicals enter a standard Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), they will be largely removed in the primary settling tank and fat trap and thus, only limited amounts will get in contact with activated sludge organisms (Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b; ECHA, 2017). The substance is generally not expected to be present in the water column due to the low water solubility. The log Koc values indicate a potential for adsorption to sewage sludge. Thus, further reduction of the substance concentration in the water column due to adsorption is possible (Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b; ECHA, 2017).
The volatilization potential of the substance is very low (vapour pressure < 0.0001 Pa at 25 °C). An accumulation in air as well as subsequent transportation and deposition into other environmental compartments is not expected.
The physico-chemical properties of Glycerol monomyristate indicate that the substance will be mainly distributed to soil and sediment if released to the environment. An accumulation and persistence in the environment is not expected due to the ready biodegradability of the substance.
